I was jealous. No. Angry. No. Envious.
Truth is. I don't even know what I feel right now. My chest was a tight knot, different emotions clawing at me from every direction.
How come Chloe cheats on her fiancé and still gets treated like delicate glass? He's not even mad at her. Not really. He's here talking about how hard it is for him to tell her his diagnosis.
What the actual fuck?
The silence between us was unbearable. The kind that presses down and doesn't let up. Only the soft lap of water against the shore and the occasional bird call filled the air.
He finally exhaled, long and shaky. His voice was rough when it came.
"It's cruel, Sav. That you and I carry this truth together, while she,of all people, gets to stay in the dark."
My teeth ground together. I was tempted. So tempted to remind him just how much of a bitch Chloe is. That he's a pathetic prick for tolerating her screwing another man, for still holding her hand after she got pregnant by him.
But maybe this was Karma's way of teaching him a lesson. And oh,how poetic that would be.
"Then open up to her." My voice was dry and deliberately cruel. "Tell her the truth. See if it's the ultimate test of love."
My tone dripped with mockery, but he didn't even pick up on it.He
just stared further out toward the rippling water, his shoulders tight.
"It's not that easy."
I scoffed loudly. "Not that easy? Are you forgetting she cheated on you?"
His jaw tightened, but he said nothing.
I leaned in, pressing harder, twisting the knife. "Is the wedding still going to hold tomorrow?"
Still nothing. He didn't even look at me.
Heat bubbled in my chest, rising to my throat until it burned.I shoved myself up, brushing dried leaves from my butt with jerky, furious movements. "I'm leaving. I'll let them know where to pick you up."
I turned to walk away, but before my foot hit the dirt path, his voice sliced the air.
"I cheated on her too."
The leaves crunched under my heel as I froze. Slowly. I turned back.
His posture was slumped in defeat like a man who had already been stripped bare. "I'm not innocent either," he muttered, voice hollow. "I propositioned you. Fuck, Sav... What do you expect me to do? Leave her?She sent me a text threatening to kill herself if I don't show up tomorrow."His hands tangled in his hair, tugging like he wanted to rip it out.
My lip curled. "We both know she's being dramatic. She's not actually going to kill herself. She's a fucking narcissist."
"You can't be sure." His head snapped up, eves wide.almod
"Chloe's really fragile-"
"Fragile my ass." The words flew out before I could stop them. "She gets away with everything, doesn't she?"
"You don't understand."
"Oh, I understand perfectly." My voice sharpened into a blade. "You're a coward. Too weak to stand up to a woman who cheated on you and-"I paused, chest heaving. The words sat heavy on my tongue, poisonous and sweet at the same time. "-and got pregnant for her ex."
The world went still.
Even the wind seemed to stop. Not the water, not the birds, not even my own breath.dared to move.
His head jerked toward me so fast I feared he got whiplash. "What did you just say?" His voice was low, dangerous, like the rumble of a storm gathering.
I instinctively took a step back.
"Savannah." He rose slowly from the ground, every inch of him taut and trembling. "I said, what did you just say?"
"You heard me." My voice was sharp, but my throat was tight.I forced myself forward, meeting him head-on. "Your fiancée is pregnant for her ex-boyfriend, Zane. He was with her that night at the mall when we went looking for her. I saw him."
His face drained of all color. Like the blood had been sucked out, leaving him pale, hollow.
The sight thrilled me. And yet still it terrified me.
But I went in for the kill anyway. "What now? Suddenly you care? I thought you were fine with her spreading her legs for other men.Why are you reacting like this now, huh?" I stabbed a finger hard against his chest."What changed?!"
He didn't move. Didn't even know what to say. His whole body was rigid, like a statue carved out of ice.
The silence stretched so long I almost laughed from the tension.Almost.
"See you at the wedding tomorrow," I scoffed, rolling my eyes and spinning on my heel.
"There will be no wedding."
His voice stopped me cold.
I froze mid-step, heart flipping, skipping, tripping over itself in joy.
I turned slowly. "What?"
"There will be no wedding," he repeated, each word deliberate."Take me to the house and I'll tell her myself. It's over."
My insides lit up like fireworks. Chloe's big day, her perfect fantasy, was about to go up in flames. I wanted to dance, scream, twirl in delight. But I kept my smile small and controlled. No need to show all my cards.
"Fine," I said casually, biting back the shriek of excitement rising in my throat.
He started toward my new car. My joy dropped for a second
Umm... no. You're not stepping foot in there.
"I already called you an Uber," I said quickly, moving in front of him."It'll be here in a few minutes."
He frowned. "Uber? Why? I thought you drove here."
Yes. I did. But hell would freeze over before he smeared his dirt all over my perfect customized leather seats.
"You arrived in an Uber too, didn't you?"
He gave a reluctant nod.
"Perfect. So it shouldn't be anything new leaving in one."
He looked at me like I was the strangest creature alive, then finally gave a small nod of agreement.
"I'll get going first. Don't want to keep Roman waiting." My tone was light and airy, but also calculated.
At the mention of Roman, his fists clenched. His jaw locked. His nostrils flared as he exhaled like he was trying to smother a fireinside him.
The reaction made me smile.Yes!
"That's not love, Sav." His voice was tight, almost bitter. "That's obsession. There's something about that guy."
I plastered on my brightest, fakest smile. "Lucky me. I've always craved the obsessive type of love."
And with that, I turned and walked away, every step victorious, the echo of his shattered engagement trailing behind me like the sweetest
music I'd ever heard.
