Amelia's deep eyes widened in astonishment.
No way.How could this be?
When she left. Paxton was almost fully recovered and didn't need any more treatment.
"Yeah, your dad's in the hospital, waiting for surgery. His heart's acting up again, and he needs another stent. We can't afford it, and you..."
"Hello, dispatcher, there's a robbery happening on the street." Amelia calmly pulled out her phone and called the police.
But Nina snatched the phone from her. "This is the latest model, must've cost over ten grand. Look at you, living the high life. Just a bit of your money could save us. How can you be so heartless, just watching your mother and sister suffer?"
How ironic and absurd to encounter the two people who once deeply humiliated her.
Amelia waited for Nina to finish her rant and then said, "There are cameras around the hospital entrance, in front of this store, and on that utility pole over there. I'll giveyou three seconds to leave, or I'll see you at the police station."
The scared girl she used to be was long gone. Now, she feared nothing.
"Mom, she seems different." Karen grabbed Nina's arm, trembling. "Could she really not be Amelia?"
Nina wasn't so sure anymore. She stared at Amelia, comparing her to old
photos on her phone, and realized there was a big difference.
Amelia used to be a timid, pitiful kitten.
This woman in front of them had a much stronger presence, almost like an Iron Lady.
Damn. Did they mistake her identity?
"Mom, what's wrong? Don't faint!" Karen had an idea, holding Nina and frantically winking at her.
Nina got the hint and collapsed.
Karen screamed,"Momn, someone help!"
She glanced at Amelia, who looked indifferent and even amused.
"How heartless." A deep male voice came from behind Amelia, dripping with sarcasm.
She didn't need to turn around to know who it was.
"Mr. Spencer, your arm's better?" She shot back coldly.
"Chris, you're here. Look at her, is she Amelia? She says she's not,but..."
"Cut the act." Chris waved his hand, looking pleased. "She's heartless and won't budge just because you shed a few tears."
His words were infuriating.
Amelia didn't bother to argue and turned to leave.
But her heart felt heavy, likeit was weighed down by thick, wet cotton.
"Chris, what did you mean by that? Do you think she's Amelia too?"Karen stopped her fake tears. "But why won't she admit it? What happened to her these past few years? Why has she changed into a different person?"
Chris watched Amelia's determined back, a dark shadow crossing his eyes."I have no idea."
"Don't worry, I've been keeping an eye on Mr. Tudor's situation." On the phone, Shawn reassured her softly, "Rest easy."
Amelia sighed in relief, "Thanks, Shawn. I couldn't have made it without you these past few years."
After hanging up, Amelia sat in the garden for a bit, trying to get her emotions in check before heading to Victor's hospital room.
She was grateful to have a friend like Shawn, who always had her back.
She needed to stay focused and reach her goal as soon as possible.
Time flew by, and three days passed.
Shawn brought news that Paxton did have some health issues and needed a stent, but it wasn't serious. He had already covered the medical bills, and the surgery could be arranged in a couple of days.
Amelia tried to transfer a hundred thousand dollars, but Shawn refused it.
"We are good friends and I would like to show my care for your father,"Shawn explained.
Two days later, Paxton had the surgery. Karen and Nina stayed at the hospital, while Shawn was kept outside, and no one could get close to
gather information.
That night, the hospital reported bad news: Paxton's surgery had triggered other acute conditions, and he was in critical condition.
Hearing this, Amelia panicked and rushed to the hospital.
She couldn't go against her nature anymore when it came to her father.
After years of not seeing him, their reunion was under such circumstances.Amelia's heart ached, and tears welled up uncontrollably. She wiped them away and stepped on the gas.
Suddenly,the phone rang urgently!
She held the steering wheel with one hand and reached out to turn it off.only to see the caller was Lucius.
"Your father is fine." Lucius's voice was particularly calm on the phone."Someone deliberately misled you, trying to expose your identity."
Amelia's mind went blank.
Lucius continued, "Trust me."
Amelia cried, overwhelmed by the immense relief.
"Thank you, Mr. Howard, As long as my dad is okay, that's allthat matters." She had been terrified, her mind filled with memories of her time with Paxton. And that stormy night four years ago, when Paxton cried and begged her to ask Chris not to divorce her.
Her father was always her weakness.
"Amelia, I don't want to see you lose control like this again." Lucius
paused before speaking again.
Amelia shivered. She took a deep breath, "Got it."
Twenty minutes later, she parked in a temporary spot outside the hospital and walked in alone.
The moment she appeared, she was spotted.
"Amelia, you said you're not Amelia? You bitch, I finally caught you!"Nina ran out of the stairwell like a madwoman, grabbing Amelia's arm."Don't you admit it? You..."
"Release me." Amelia coldly shook her off, looking at her with disgust, and brushed off nonexistent dust from her clothes. "Show some respect."
"Respect? Amelia, don't forget who gave birth to you and raised you. After all these years, you're still shameless, not even admitting yourown mother!" Karen gritted her teeth, full of hate.
"Stop pretending. If you are not Amelia, why did you come here to visit your dad?" Nina looked smug, as if her trick had worked.
Amelia showed a puzzled expression,"Who?"
"Your dad,Paxton Tudor. You're still pretending?"
"I've got my own business and don't have time to argue with you." Amelia calmly walked past them towards the outpatient building.
Nina was totally stunned, her mouth hanging open but no words coming out.
