Chapter 19: Chapter 19

Jenna's lips twisted into a bitter smile as she met Sean's gaze. "Tell me honestly, Sean. Did that place ever feel like home to Milo and me?"

Her words struck like a blade, piercing straight through his heart.

His Adam's apple bobbed, but no sound came out.

"This isn't the right environment for you," Sean said through clenched teeth. "Listen to me. Quit this job."

"I like it just fine." Jenna's voice remained steady. "At least I don't have to beg Uncle Victor for Milo's medical bills anymore. No more enduring their condescending looks. No more serving them like a maid."

Five years of living under their roof. Five years of swallowing every insult.

She would've left long ago if not for Milo.

Now that she'd finally escaped, she'd never go back.

"I'll give you a thousand dollars every month," Sean blurted, desperation creeping into his voice. "Just walk away from this place."

He couldn't bear to see his little sister sinking into this life.

"This isn't your concern." Jenna's tone left no room for argument. "But thank you."

"Jenna—"

"If you truly care about me," she interrupted, "don't tell Uncle Victor where I work."

She knew exactly how that family would react.

Sean exhaled sharply, defeat weighing down his shoulders.

"Call me if you need anything."

"I will. Now excuse me—I have work to do."

As Jenna walked away, Sean clenched his fists until his knuckles turned white.

Useless. He was a useless brother.

"Damn it!"

His fist collided with the wall before he stormed off, fury radiating from every step.

......

The shrill ringtone jolted Jenna awake the next morning.

Grandma Blanche's name flashed across the screen.

She answered immediately. "Grandma?"

"Come have lunch with me today, dear."

"Mr. Roscente and Milo should be back by noon. I already bought groceries..." Jenna hedged politely.

"Perfect! I'll be right over." Grandma Blanche cheerfully cut her off.

Jenna took a deep breath as she ended the call.

After a quick shower, she dressed and applied light makeup.

The reflection staring back looked refreshed.

Hesitating, she dialed Ethan's number.

Ring... Ring...

The call went straight to voicemail.

Jenna stared at her phone, chest tightening.

Was he still upset over yesterday's misunderstanding?

If she'd really been after his money, she would've signed that prenup ages ago.

She sighed. When you live under someone else's roof, you learn to swallow your pride.
