At 6:30 in the morning, Milo Roland rubbed his sleepy eyes as he entered the living room.
Seeing Jenna Roland curled up asleep on the sofa, he walked past her toward the bathroom without a second thought.
The sound of running water filled the air as Milo finished washing up. He changed into his school uniform and headed to the kitchen.
Ethan Roscente appeared in the living room, adjusting his cufflinks. His gaze briefly swept over Jenna on the sofa before he strode toward the bathroom.
By the time a steaming bowl of plain noodle soup was placed on the table, Ethan had just finished drying his hair.
"Mr. Roscente, I made noodles," Milo said, handing him chopsticks with slightly nervous hands.
Ethan accepted them, his eyes dropping to the bowl in front of him.
Slender white noodles swam in amber broth, topped with vibrant green scallions and a fried egg with crisp golden edges.
The savory aroma lingered in the air.
He took a bite. The noodles had the perfect chew, and the broth was rich with umami.
Milo kept his head down, quietly slurping his noodles.
"Aren't you going to wake her?" Ethan's voice was icy.
Milo glanced at his sleeping sister. "She got home late from her night shift. Let her rest."
"Where does she work?" Ethan paused mid-bite.
"A 24-hour convenience store," Milo answered without hesitation.
A flicker of mockery crossed Ethan's eyes.
This woman didn't even blink when lying.
"High school sophomore?" Ethan abruptly changed the subject.
Milo's hand jerked, nearly dropping his noodles. "Y-yes."
Ethan set down his chopsticks and stood to leave.
Only after the front door closed did Milo finally exhale in relief.
His sister had said Ethan was a company executive, but his presence was more intimidating than their school principal.
As Milo cleared the table, he couldn't help stealing another glance at Jenna on the sofa.
How was his sister going to survive living with this man?
......
A shrill ringtone yanked Jenna from her dreams.
"Hello?" she mumbled, fumbling for her phone.
"Hey sis, I'm eating at a friend's place. Don't wait for me at lunch," Milo's voice came through the receiver.
