Stella and Sylvia stepped out of the bathroom wrapped in towels, droplets still clinging to their hair. The aroma of cooked food drifted from the kitchen. Exchanging a glance, they pushed the door open to help.
Jenna stirred the vegetables in the wok without turning around, passing the salt shaker to Stella over her shoulder.
Three dishes and a soup were soon served. Jenna wiped her hands. "Go ahead and eat. I saved some for Vincent and the others."
Stella picked up a piece of braised pork, her eyes lighting up. "Your cooking keeps getting better, Jenna."
Jenna leaned back on the couch, texting Milo: "Stella and Sylvia are staying a few days. You and Ryan take a hotel."
An OK emoji popped up instantly.
Amid the clinking of utensils, Sylvia suddenly whispered, "Sis, do you think those people might—"
"Shh." Stella glanced toward the living room. "Eat first."
After clearing the table, Stella pushed Jenna onto the sofa. "Rest. We'll handle this."
Jenna's gaze lingered on the dark circles under their eyes. "The guest room is ready. Go take a nap."
She led them to the room and quietly closed the door.
The deadbolt clicked shut. Standing in the foyer, Jenna dialed the security camera company.
At exactly eleven, a technician in blue overalls arrived with his toolbox.
"Visible installation at the door, hidden on the opposite wall." Jenna pointed to the fire exit. "Put a pinhole camera there."
As the technician wired the system on his ladder, Jenna's phone buzzed. Ethan's message appeared: "Need help?"
She stared at the screen for three seconds before replying, "Not yet."
Her fingers trembled slightly as she handed over $2,000 in cash. On her phone app, three camera feeds lit up simultaneously. The pinhole lens even captured the small ads on the stairwell walls.
When the alarm system was set, the technician pointed to the interface. "Red light flashes if someone tampers with the cameras."
The microwave beeped. Carrying a thermal lunchbox, Jenna ran into Ethan in the elevator.
"Delivering food?" His eyes dropped to the bag in her hand.
Jenna nodded. "Might not be at the studio much lately."
The hospital hallway reeked of disinfectant. Vincent accepted the meal as Jenna abruptly said, "Can I borrow two men?"
Yves froze mid-bite. "What's wrong?"
"Someone's targeting my friends." Jenna tightened her grip on her backpack straps. "They're all women. I'm worried."
Zachary slammed the table. "I'll go! Not even a fly will get past me!"
Vincent chewed slowly. "Reason?"
"Miss Roland's braised pork is ten times better than hospital food!" Yves' ears turned red.
A muffled laugh came from the corner. Watching the three men argue over who would guard her apartment, Jenna felt some tension ease.
"Then it's settled." As she turned, the glass window reflected Vincent's hesitant expression behind her.
