What if Alexander Can Never Stand Again
Benjamin Carter asked his question directly.
Evelyn answered without any hesitation.
She looked straight at him. "Dr. Carter, our butler Samuel told me you are the one treating Alexander's legs."
Benjamin nodded, a faint smile on his lips. "That is correct."
Evelyn took a deep breath. Her eyes held a flicker of anxiety mixed with desperate hope. "After all these years of treatment... is there still a possibility for his legs to recover?"
Benjamin's expression shifted almost imperceptibly. He kept his voice neutral, echoing a sentiment Alexander had once expressed. "Improvement is possible," he said cautiously. "But I cannot guarantee a specific timeline. Many factors remain uncertain."
A spark of hope ignited in Evelyn's expression. "This morning, I accidentally stepped on Alexander's foot. He felt it. He felt actual pain. Could that be a good sign?"
Benjamin offered a reassuring smile. "Mrs. Blackwood, your concern for him is evident. I will continue to pursue every possible avenue for improvement. However..."
Evelyn interrupted quickly, her voice laced with worry. "However what?"
He continued, "This process may require your active participation. As his wife, your support could be crucial."
"Absolutely!" Evelyn responded instantly, relief washing over her. "I will do anything. I still believe his condition can get better."
While Benjamin made no promises of a full recovery, Evelyn clung to the possibility of any progress.
Benjamin watched her carefully, his face an unreadable mask.
Since the traumatic kidnapping incident, it had become abundantly clear to Benjamin how deeply Alexander cared for Evelyn.
Alexander had even considered telling her the entire truth.
But the more people who knew the secret of Alexander's supposed disability, the greater the risk to his safety.
"Mrs. Blackwood, I'd like to ask you something. It might be somewhat personal, so please feel free not to answer if you're uncomfortable," Benjamin said unexpectedly.
Evelyn was unfazed. "Please, ask."
His gaze was intense, studying her face for the slightest reaction. "What if Alexander can never stand again? What would you do then?"
Evelyn paused only for a moment before answering with firm conviction. "When I married Alexander, his ability to walk was not a condition. Throughout our marriage, he has shown me nothing but kindness and incredible bravery. He saved my life. No matter what happens, I will stay by his side. If he never walks again, I am prepared to support him and care for him for the rest of our lives."
Benjamin was visibly moved by her declaration.
In that moment, he began to understand why Alexander held Evelyn in such high esteem.
It was her profound generosity and selflessness.
After a thoughtful silence, Benjamin had an idea. "Mrs. Blackwood, I have a thought. A new approach that might aid Alexander's recovery. But it would demand immense patience from you. Without your commitment, it won't work. Are you willing to try?"
Evelyn's eyes shone with determination. "If there is any chance it can help Alexander, I am ready to do whatever it takes. Dr. Carter, please tell me what I need to do."
