Chapter 284: Chapter 283

Evelyn’s thoughts snapped back to the present.

She shook her head firmly. "No."

Her tone left no room for argument. She wouldn't dwell on Theodore's pursuit. She certainly wouldn't mention it to Alexander.

She could easily imagine his reaction. His face would darken with displeasure. A hint of jealousy would flicker in his eyes.

His birthday was approaching. She wanted to keep the mood light.

She tilted her head, her voice casual. "Alexander, isn't your birthday soon?"

He blinked, genuine surprise on his face. "I'd almost forgotten."

Evelyn feigned shock. "How could you forget your own birthday?"

He shrugged, his gaze turning reflective. "I never celebrated much as a child. There was no one to celebrate with. A birthday alone isn't a celebration," he explained softly.

Her heart ached for him. She leaned closer, her voice warm. "But you have me now. I'm here with you. We have to celebrate."

A slow smile spread across Alexander's face. Anticipation lit his eyes.

"You're right," he agreed.

After a moment, he remembered something. He had once seen Evelyn's records. Her birthdate was blank. "When is your birthday?" he asked curiously.

"I don't know," she replied softly, her eyes downcast. She shook her head gently. A wistful smile touched her lips. "I was left at the orphanage doorstep. We all shared a birthday there. They used the day they found me. Sometimes, I envy people who know their real birthday."

A sharp pang of empathy struck Alexander. His chest tightened. He took a steadying breath. Then he reached out and gently took her hand.

"Then let's do this. My birthday is in a few days. We'll celebrate ours together this year."

Evelyn's face brightened. Excitement sparkled in her eyes. "Yes, let's do that. It will be much more fun."

With the plan set, Evelyn threw herself into preparations. She decorated Serenity Oaks with festive touches. She meticulously handcrafted invitation cards. Her dedication was clear. Her excitement was contagious.

Alexander watched her with an affectionate chuckle. "Isn't this a bit much for a birthday?" he teased, amused.

Her eyes shone with sincerity. "That's exactly why we should! It's a birthday. It deserves a proper celebration. I know you prefer things quiet. We'll keep the guest list small. Only a few friends you actually like."

He arched a brow and chuckled lightly. "Fine. I'll leave it to you."

As Evelyn finished writing the invitations, she handed him a stack. "These are for your friends. I'll handle the invites for Charlotte and the others from the orphanage," she said cheerfully.

"Absolutely, darling. Consider it done," Alexander promised with dramatic flair. He tucked the invitations away carefully.

The next morning, Alexander walked the quiet halls of Benjamin's private hospital. He was there for a check-up on his leg.

In truth, the visit was a cover. He needed to discuss Theodore's latest movements.

In the dim office, Benjamin pretended to examine Alexander's leg. He whispered, "I heard Theodore has been searching for years for the woman who saved him. He found her. They met at The Grand Crestwood last night. His security is impenetrable. We tried to get closer for information. His men are always a step ahead."

Alexander's expression hardened. "Stay on him. We need to identify that woman. Whatever the cost," he instructed sharply.

"Understood," Benjamin nodded discreetly. Then he changed the subject. "Alexander, did you have anything to do with Cassandra's injury?"
