Alexander's head snapped up.
That voice was Evelyn's.
She was alone in the bathroom.
His calm demeanor shattered in an instant, his focus sharpening to a single point.
Was Evelyn hurt?
He didn't hesitate. Swiveling his wheelchair, he moved swiftly toward the bathroom door.
"Evelyn!" he called out, his voice low and urgent as he pushed the door open.
A wall of thick, humid air greeted him.
His eyes scanned the steamy room, searching for her.
Evelyn stood frozen, a towel wrapped tightly around her. Her hair was piled loosely on her head, still wet.
Fear was written all over her face. When she saw him, she released a breath she seemed to have been holding.
Alexander's gaze swept over her, a wave of relief washing through him when he saw she was physically unharmed.
He let out a quiet breath. "What is it? I heard you call for me."
Evelyn's eyes were locked on a far corner of the room. She spoke in a hushed, terrified whisper.
"Alexander... there's a spider."
Her voice shook slightly.
Seeing her distress, Alexander followed her line of sight and spotted the small creature in the corner.
Understanding dawned.
"So, my brave wife is afraid of spiders?" he teased, a slight smile touching his lips.
Evelyn shoved his shoulder weakly. "Alexander, don't. This isn't funny."
She was clearly on edge, her body rigid with fear as she watched the spider, terrified it might move toward her.
If that thing jumped on her, she would absolutely lose her mind!
"Alexander! Do something!" Her voice quivered, tears threatening.
Alexander immediately dropped the teasing tone and reached for her. "Come here, sweetheart. Take my hand. Move slowly."
"It's okay. It won't come near you."
Evelyn let out a soft, frightened sound, her eyes still glued to the spider as she quickly grabbed his outstretched hand.
In the next moment, she practically threw herself into his arms, her body trembling uncontrollably.
She pressed herself against him, shaking from head to toe.
"It's alright, you're safe," Alexander murmured, rubbing soothing circles on her back. His voice was a calm anchor in the steamy room. "I've got you."
He looked down at Evelyn, her face buried in his chest, and a small smile touched his lips.
Seeing Evelyn, who was usually so fierce and independent, appear so fragile and vulnerable was a rare sight.
But Alexander, sensing the genuine fear, wisely chose not to tease her further.
He held her, offering quiet comfort until the intense heat in the bathroom began to dissipate.
Alexander gently touched the nape of her neck. "Thank goodness for the heated floors. I'd hate for you to catch a chill."
Evelyn lifted her head just enough to peer at him. "I'm not cold."
He tucked a stray, damp strand of hair behind her ear, his voice soft. "It's gone now. The spider is gone."
"Will it come back?" Evelyn asked, her eyes still slightly red.
Alexander spoke with quiet authority. "I'll have Samuel send someone up immediately to ensure it's dealt with. I promise, you won't see another bug in here."
With his assurance, Evelyn finally relaxed a little, her body losing some of its tension.
She glanced around cautiously, double-checking the corners, before she made a move to step back from his embrace.
But the moment she shifted, his arm tightened around her waist, holding her firmly in place.
Evelyn looked up into Alexander's eyes, a question on her lips, but the words died as she saw the new, intense look in his gaze.
