Evelyn stared at Alexander's bleeding arm, her expression hardening.
"You are going to the hospital and you are staying there until you are completely healed."
Her voice was firm. "If you don't take proper care of this injury, I swear I will not speak to you again."
A moment of silence hung between them.
"Just do as I say," she insisted.
Alexander started to object, but the intensity of her gaze made his words die in his throat.
"It's really not that serious..."
That was the final straw for Evelyn.
Annoyed, she reached out and pinched his cheek.
"Oh? It doesn't hurt, you say? Go on, say it again. I dare you."
Earlier, when a wooden club had slammed into his arm, Alexander hadn't made a sound.
Now, a simple pinch from Evelyn made him flinch.
"Alright, fine! You win. I'll listen to you," Alexander surrendered.
Theodore watched the exchange, his lips twitching in disbelief.
What an absolute performance artist.
Once the formalities were concluded, Theodore withdrew his complaint.
Both men ended up receiving treatment at the same hospital.
For convenience, Evelyn personally arranged for their rooms to be adjacent.
The moment Theodore settled onto his bed, he instructed his assistant.
"Daniel, contact the best medical team. Have them come and examine me immediately."
He was practically radiating satisfaction at the prospect of Evelyn's attention.
In his mind, the confrontation with Alexander had been entirely worthwhile.
Not only had he released his pent-up frustration, but he had also managed to secure a closer position to the woman he desired.
Next door, Alexander had summoned Benjamin from a private clinic.
The moment Benjamin entered the room and saw Alexander's condition, he was stunned.
"What in the world happened to you? I saw you a few hours ago and you were fine." Benjamin's tone was laced with genuine alarm.
He had just finished attending to Evelyn earlier.
Now it was Alexander?
What was going on with this couple?
Evelyn let out a weary sigh, unsure how to even begin explaining.
On his way over, Benjamin had already picked up fragments of the story.
Seeing that neither Evelyn nor Alexander seemed eager to elaborate, he continued.
"Seriously, Alexander, what possessed you to confront Theodore Vance? I heard you two got into such a scuffle that the police were involved. And now look at you both, laid up in hospital beds."
He shook his head and took a seat. "If this gets out, the gossip mills in this town will go into overdrive."
Alexander's face darkened. "Enough. Talking about it won't change anything. It's just irritating."
Evelyn snorted. "Oh? Now you realize how absurd this whole situation is?"
Benjamin couldn't suppress a laugh, glancing between the two of them.
"Oh wow, are you two bickering now?"
Alexander was already in a foul mood.
The knowledge that Evelyn would be tending to Theodore next door only made it worse.
"Just shut up!" Alexander snapped.
Benjamin clutched his chest in mock offense.
"Alexander, where are your manners? We've been friends for years, and this is how you treat me?"
His dramatic act had the intended effect. Evelyn frowned.
"Alexander, be respectful to Dr. Carter. He came all this way to treat you. The least you can do is show some appreciation."
Evelyn had called him out.
Realizing he had upset her, Alexander quickly turned to Benjamin.
"Sorry. I didn't mean to take it out on you."
Benjamin's eyes widened in sheer astonishment.
Alexander was apologizing? That was a rare occurrence indeed.
Evelyn truly had him wrapped around her finger.
