Chapter 56: Chapter 56

You Are Not Fit to Lay Eyes on Him

Evelyn’s gaze swept over the group before her, watching their expressions shift with discomfort. A faint, amused smile touched her lips. She tilted her head slightly, her tone deceptively light. “Well? Has your memory returned?”

A flurry of stammered responses filled the air.

“Y-yes, we remember.”

“Evelyn, it was just… office chatter. We didn’t mean any harm.”

“That’s right! It was all just rumors. It won’t happen again, we swear.”

Evelyn let out a short, sharp laugh that held no warmth. Her eyes turned icy. “You were spreading malicious falsehoods. You will apologize. And you will ensure this never happens again.”

Cowed by the steel in her voice, they hurriedly muttered their apologies and practically fled the break room.

It was, without a doubt, a deeply humiliating experience.

As the room emptied, Genevieve, who had remained silent throughout the confrontation, tried to slip away.

Evelyn moved swiftly, blocking her path. Her eyes locked onto Genevieve’s. “Not so fast. You haven’t apologized. You’re not leaving.”

Genevieve’s face contorted with anger. “What is this, Evelyn? I only stated a fact. You got into a luxury car. I have the photograph as proof. Are you going to deny it now?”

This accusation made the retreating coworkers halt in their tracks. They turned back, their curiosity reignited.

Genevieve had photographic evidence. This changed everything.

They watched, eager to see how Evelyn would squirm out of this.

But Evelyn’s expression remained unshaken. She met Genevieve’s challenging stare directly. “Yes. I did get into that car.”

A stunned silence fell over the break room. Her colleagues stared at her, their shock quickly morphing into indignation.

She had just shamed them for gossiping and forced apologies, only to admit the gossip was true? The audacity was infuriating.

A triumphant smirk spread across Genevieve’s face. She looked at Evelyn with pure contempt. “Well, well. The truth comes out at last.”

She crossed her arms, her voice dripping with sarcasm. “Did you really think you could intimidate us with a recording? We were speaking the truth. The police would do nothing to us. If anything, they’d be more interested in you, a potential mistress.”

A few of the onlookers failed to suppress their snickers.

Evelyn’s face was a mask of calm. “Genevieve, let me be perfectly clear. That was my husband’s car. Continue with your slander, and you will face the consequences.”

“Your husband?” Genevieve burst into a harsh, disbelieving laugh, as if Evelyn had told a hilarious joke. “Oh, please, Evelyn. Who are you trying to fool?”

She scoffed, her eyes narrowing to slits. “You have no family, no background. How could you possibly be married to a man of wealth? It’s impossible.”

Her tone was thick with mock pity. “And if you were truly the wife of a rich man, why would you be working here at Aethelgard Industries? Stop the act. No one is buying it.”

She gave Evelyn a slow, deliberate once-over, a calculating gleam in her eye. “If this husband of yours is real, then bring him here. Let us all be the judge of whether you’re lying.”

Evelyn barely glanced at her, her voice laced with bored dismissal. “You are not fit to lay eyes on him.”

Genevieve sneered. “Oh? Is he some kind of royalty?”

She lifted her chin, arrogance radiating from her. “Let me remind you—I am a Prescott. Your so-called husband’s status is likely far beneath my family’s.”

Her lips curled in derision. “You put on such airs. What, is your husband supposed to be the mysterious founder of Aethelgard Industries himself?”

Seeing that Genevieve had no intention of apologizing and was intent on escalating the situation, Evelyn’s gaze sharpened to a razor’s edge. “I see. You have no intention of apologizing. You only wish to create a bigger scene.”
