Isabella’s gesture drew Ethan’s attention to where Lucas and she sat close beneath the amber glow of a streetlamp.
His knuckles tightened instinctively. A bitter taste flooded his mouth.
She left their son alone to be with another man?
Lucas spotted Ethan first. His smile vanished instantly.
Surprise flickered across Isabella’s face. She hadn’t expected to see him here.
Benjamin had told her Ethan was overseas on business. He wasn’t supposed to return so soon.
Lucas watched the way Isabella stared at Ethan. A sharp pain pierced his heart. “Isabella, do you still have feelings for him?”
The question caught her off guard. Ethan, holding Liam, was close enough to hear every word. He observed them silently. A faint glimmer of expectation shone in his eyes.
What was he hoping for? What answer did he want from her?
Isabella’s mind was in turmoil. She hesitated, lost for words. “I don’t know.”
Her tone was distant. She avoided looking at Ethan. Quickly, she stood up and motioned for Liam to come to her.
“Liam, we’re going home now.”
She hurried her son toward the elevator, desperate to escape the suffocating tension. Her heart hammered violently against her ribs. An invisible force seemed to clutch her chest, squeezing the air from her lungs.
Once Isabella disappeared into the building, Lucas approached Ethan.
“Mr. Blackwood, I didn’t realize you still enjoyed tormenting your ex-wife.”
Ethan responded with a cold laugh. “Ex-wife? Lucas, we are still legally married. Furthermore, this property belongs to Blackwood Enterprises.” He emphasized “Blackwood Enterprises,” his voice laced with a clear threat.
Only then did Lucas take a proper look around. He realized he was standing on a property developed by Blackwood Enterprises last year. Silence fell over him as he recognized his mistake.
It was mere coincidence that Isabella’s apartment was in a Blackwood property. To anyone else, it looked deliberately arranged by Ethan.
“Ethan, it’s over between you two. Why can’t you just let go?” Lucas asked.
Ethan offered no reply. He merely scoffed and turned away.
The car door shut with a solid thud. Ethan sank into the leather seat, his expression dark and heavy with a palpable melancholy.
“She said she didn’t know. How absurd.”
“Mr. Blackwood, you came straight here from the airport without even resting. Should we head to the office or return to Hawthorne Residence?” Benjamin, sitting in the front seat, voiced his concern.
Initially, Benjamin thought Ethan’s rush was due to the situation with Sophia. But the moment Ethan landed, he came directly to see her. It was then Benjamin understood his error.
