Sophia’s blood ran cold.
“Repeat that,” she commanded, her voice slicing through the air.
The assistant extended a tablet, hands visibly shaking. Sophia grabbed it, her eyes scanning the screen with furious intensity.
Every trace of the smear campaign had disappeared—every planted rumor, every hint of doubt—wiped clean.
In their place were shining endorsements for Isabella, industry professionals publicly declaring their unwavering support, praising her brilliance and vision.
“What is the meaning of this?” she thundered, her rage palpable.
The assistant flinched.
“I—I’m not entirely sure, but… it appears Mr. Blackwood’s team is responsible.”
“Ethan?” Sophia snarled, her face contorted with fury. “He actually defended her?” Her fingers tightened around the tablet, knuckles white, before she hurled it to the floor. The screen shattered loudly, the sound echoing in the tense silence.
“I refuse to believe he’s picking her over me!” Sophia shouted, incredulous. Silently, the assistant lowered his gaze, too afraid to speak.
Sophia struggled to compose herself.
Meanwhile, inside the CEO office of Blackwood Enterprises, Ethan was seated at his desk, deeply focused on a document, a frown creasing his brow.
“Benjamin, report,” he said.
Benjamin stood before him, beginning, “Mr. Blackwood, we’ve successfully eliminated all negative press regarding Miss Scott. Public opinion has shifted in her favor.”
A flicker of satisfaction crossed Ethan’s eyes as he replied, “Excellent.”
Benjamin hesitated briefly, then continued, “There is another matter… It seems the source of these rumors may be linked to Miss Reed.”
Ethan’s head jerked up.
“Explain.”
“Multiple accounts spreading the rumors have been traced back to Miss Reed’s assistant.”
A shadow fell over Ethan’s expression.
“Sophia…”
His tone was low and dangerous.
He set aside the document he was reviewing, interlaced his fingers, and fixed his gaze on the investigation results displayed on his computer.
“Based on our findings, Miss Reed’s assistant was directly involved, but it is highly probable that Miss Reed herself orchestrated it,” Benjamin stated, sweat beading on his forehead.
Ethan remained silent, the room growing heavy with unspoken tension.
“Very well,” Ethan finally said. “Assign Sophia to oversee the project in Salzburg.”
Benjamin blinked in surprise.
“Salzburg?” Though the project was significant, its location was notoriously remote and difficult. This seemed like a clear demotion.
“Mr. Blackwood, regarding the Salzburg project…” Benjamin began.
Ethan’s sharp gaze cut to him.
“Is there a problem with my decision?”
“None at all.” Benjamin quickly bowed his head. “I will see to it immediately.” He offered no further objection and exited the office promptly.
Ethan’s mind was made up, and arguing was futile. Back at Sophia’s lavish residence, the atmosphere was thick with anger.
“How dare he do this to me because of her!” Sophia seethed, her flawless makeup unable to mask her rage.
