The man was Benjamin Clark, Ethan's most trusted assistant.
Ethan gave a subtle signal with his eyes.
Benjamin understood immediately and nodded in confirmation.
After dinner, Ethan offered to drive Isabella and Liam home.
Isabella quickly declined. "That's really not necessary. We can manage." She was wary of getting too close to Ethan.
"It's late. I don't feel comfortable with you two traveling alone at night," Ethan stated calmly, his tone firm.
"It's fine, we..." Isabella started, but Ethan cut her off decisively.
"I'm taking you home." His voice brooked no argument.
Isabella reluctantly agreed.
They exited the restaurant and walked towards Ethan's car. He tried to start the engine, but it failed to turn over.
Ethan feigned confusion. "What's wrong with this thing?" He tried several more times, but the car remained silent.
"Is it broken?" Isabella asked, concern creeping into her voice.
"Seems that way," Ethan replied, his expression convincingly dismayed.
Isabella grew worried. "What should we do now?"
"Don't worry. It's not far to your place from here," Ethan suggested, glancing around.
Isabella checked the time. It was indeed very late.
After a brief hesitation, she agreed. "Alright, we can walk."
"Just a moment," Ethan said unexpectedly.
Isabella looked puzzled. "Is something wrong?"
Ethan's voice was laced with genuine concern. "Given the hour, it's not safe for you and Liam to walk home alone. Please, allow me to accompany you until you're safely inside." His eyes held a sincere worry.
The offer took Isabella by surprise.
This was not the Ethan she thought she knew.
A wave of emotion washed over her.
Faced with his earnest gaze, she found herself speechless.
"I'm not sure that's a good idea," Isabella said, her voice trembling slightly.
Ethan responded with confidence. "Why hesitate? As Liam's... friend, it's my duty to ensure you both get home safely." His expression was one of absolute certainty.
Isabella opened her mouth to protest again, but then stopped herself.
"Okay, fine," she conceded reluctantly.
She took Liam's hand, and together with Ethan, they began walking home. The streetlights stretched their shadows long on the pavement.
Liam walked between them, one hand in Isabella's, the other in Ethan's, a look of pure happiness on his face.
A faint smile touched Ethan's lips, his eyes reflecting a deep sense of contentment.
Suddenly, Liam stopped. "Mommy, I'm too tired to walk."
"I'll carry you," Isabella said, immediately bending down.
"No, let me," Ethan interjected, effortlessly scooping Liam into his arms.
"Thank you, Mr. Blackwood," Liam said sweetly.
"You're welcome," Ethan replied softly, his voice gentle. He continued walking, carrying Liam securely.
