Amy's expression darkened, sending a chill through Liam. Alexander, sensing the shift in atmosphere, frowned deeply.
"Amy, what's going on?" he demanded, his voice edged with tension.
Amy ignored him, her gaze locking onto Liam instead. "I haven't been home much lately, and I'm sure you've noticed. I've already moved my things out. I won't be returning." She took a breath. "Your father and I are getting a divorce. You'll be staying with him."
Liam froze. "Divorce?" At five years old, he understood the weight of that word.
Amy nodded, about to elaborate, but Alexander cut in sharply, his face a mix of disbelief and anger. "Amy, was this really necessary to say in front of him?"
"Why not?" Amy countered, a bitter smile playing on her lips. "He deserves to know. Your son talks about fairness and respect. Or does that only apply when it suits you? When you forced me to apologize to Victoria in front of everyone, did you consider his feelings then?"
Alexander's jaw tightened. "This is between us, Amy. Liam is just a child."
Amy scoffed. "Other than biology, I don’t see how he’s my child. Your precious son has always taken the side of outsiders, bending over backward to please them."
Alexander exhaled sharply. "If he doesn’t respect you, maybe you should reflect on why."
Amy met his gaze head-on. "And when you prioritize another woman over your wife, is that my fault too?"
Alexander hesitated. Amy had been a devoted wife—he had no real complaints, not even after Victoria reentered their lives.
"Amy, I’ve told you before. Victoria and I aren’t what you think. Why can’t you let this go? Back when my company was struggling, my mother manipulated the situation—she kidnapped Victoria, threatened her. She left because she didn’t want to be my weakness. Years of stress abroad gave her depression, then a terminal illness. I owe her, Amy. You know I can’t just walk away."
Amy clapped slowly, her smile dripping with sarcasm. "What a tragic love story." Then her voice turned icy. "But what you owe Victoria is your burden. Why should I suffer for it?"
Her words were razor-sharp, her eyes unflinching.
"Alexander, let me make this clear—this divorce is happening."
Alexander studied her, his gaze inscrutable. "You really mean that?"
Amy laughed humorlessly. "Do I sound like I’m joking?"
"You always have before."
Amy arched a brow. "Has Victoria poisoned your mind so thoroughly that you’ve lost all self-awareness?"
A faint smirk tugged at Alexander’s lips. "Amy, if you truly wanted a divorce, you’d discuss it with me privately—not in front of Liam. This is just another ploy to manipulate him into stopping us, isn’t it?"
