Alexander's voice came through the phone, laced with exhaustion.
"You've been calling nonstop. Is it that important?"
Amy's tone was icy. "Alexander, did you forget we were finalizing our divorce today?"
A brief pause. Then his response. "I remember. I told you there's an emergency here. I can't leave right now."
A bitter laugh threatened to escape her.
Told her? If she hadn’t called, would he have even bothered? He’d probably erased her from his mind entirely in his busy little world.
But arguing was pointless now. The only thing that mattered was getting him to sign those papers.
"When I called earlier, Victoria had just been moved out of the emergency room. You’ve spent all morning with her. Surely you can spare the afternoon?"
To Alexander, her words dripped with accusation.
"Do you really need me there that badly?" he asked abruptly.
Amy frowned. The question was strange.
"We agreed on this yesterday," she said, her voice sharpening. "Alexander, you’re not backing out, are you?"
Silence stretched between them before he finally answered. "I know. I’ll be there."
She wasn’t satisfied. "What time?"
"I’ll call you when I’m finished."
She wasn’t having it. "Give me a specific time."
Another hesitation. "Two p.m."
"Then I’ll expect you at two, Mr. Blackwood. Don’t disappoint me again."
She hung up before he could respond.
After a moment of thought, she dialed Samantha.
"Samantha, can you find out which hospital Victoria is in?"
Samantha, with her connections as an agent, had ways of getting information most people couldn’t—even if she wasn’t quite on Alexander or Sebastian’s level.
The moment she heard Amy’s tone, she understood. "Oh no, not Victoria again?"
"Yes," Amy said, her brow furrowing. "Alexander didn’t show up this morning. I don’t trust him to come this afternoon. If he doesn’t, I’m going to the hospital myself."
This divorce was happening today, no matter what.
"Got it. I’ll dig up the details and text you."
At the hospital, Nathan watched as Alexander stepped away from the examination room to take the call, suspicion flickering in his gaze. He had a feeling it was Amy on the other end.
As he approached, he caught fragments of Alexander’s low voice.
"Do you really need me there that badly?"
"I’ll be there."
"Two p.m."
It sounded suspiciously like an arrangement.
Nathan smirked as he walked closer. "Amy again?"
Alexander slipped his phone back into his pocket. "How’s Victoria doing?"
"Not great. The doctor said she might not make it to the concert."
Nathan studied Alexander’s expression carefully before adding, "Victoria’s health has always been fragile. And lately, with everything—especially taking care of Liam for Amy—it’s been too much for her."
"She hid it from us. I had no idea it was this bad."
"But the doctor said more tests are needed to be sure."
Nathan wasn’t about to let Alexander leave today.
Alexander exhaled. "Nathan, stay with her for the tests. I have something I need to handle."
Nathan’s frown deepened. "Victoria’s condition is worsening, and you’re leaving? What could possibly be more important than this?"
Alexander’s eyes darkened, unreadable as the ocean depths. He met Nathan’s gaze and slowly began to speak.
