Patrick Montgomery leaned forward, his expression serious. "This is precisely why I sought you out, Miss Scott. A partnership between us could ensure my family retains its political influence."
Elise Scott offered a polite smile. "You overestimate me, Mr. Montgomery. I'm far less wealthy than other prominent figures in Crestwood, and certainly no match for the Levines. I've never involved myself in politics, so an alliance with me offers you little advantage."
"Don't underestimate yourself, Miss Scott," Patrick countered with a confident grin. "Your unique position is evident, especially considering how completely William Levine has fallen for you—"
"Sentiment and capability aren't necessarily connected," Elise interrupted sharply.
"True, but that's merely one aspect," Patrick continued, undeterred. "Secondly, if Charles Stuart intends to enter politics, our branch of the family must establish stronger business connections. While you might not currently compete with major corporations, I believe a rising star like you will soon surpass most competitors. I'm willing to place my trust in you."
He paused meaningfully before adding, "Most importantly, we share a common goal: preventing the marriage between William Levine and Victoria Stuart."
"Actually, I'd prefer to see that marriage happen," Elise stated without hesitation.
She wasn't being spiteful or dishonest—she genuinely wished William and Victoria happiness from the bottom of her heart. Their union would allow her to cleanly remove herself from the complicated equation.
Patrick sighed deeply. "Whatever you might believe, Miss Scott, I know with certainty that William would never marry Victoria."
"Then why approach me?" Elise raised an eyebrow. "You should be speaking with him directly."
"That would reveal my intentions too clearly," Patrick explained. "Currently, there's a delicate truce between my family and Charles's faction. Neither side has burned bridges yet. I need your assistance specifically with Victoria."
Elise's eyes narrowed suspiciously, but Patrick pressed on. "Everyone assumes James Stuart is the key to their family's advancement, but they're mistaken. The real responsibility rests on Victoria's shoulders. James is merely a pawn for their next move, while Victoria manages Stuart Group. If anything happens to her, their business empire crumbles and their arranged marriage with the Levines collapses. Without his commercial empire supporting him, Charles's political ambitions become pure fantasy."
"You're vastly overestimating my capabilities, Mr. Montgomery," Elise repeated firmly. "Right now, I want nothing more than to stay far away from Victoria Stuart. I don't believe I possess the resources to challenge her."
"Perhaps, but the choice isn't yours to make anymore," Patrick shrugged. "You've become an obstacle in her path, and she won't rest until you're eliminated. Her previous failed attempt will only make her more determined. You're intelligent enough to understand this. Don't fool yourself into thinking you'll be safe if she marries William Levine. She's not the type to leave potential threats unchecked."
Elise bit her lip, unable to refute his logic.
Patrick pressed his advantage. "I know you're not someone who surrenders easily. Otherwise, you wouldn't have achieved all you have despite your circumstances. Your resilience is admirable, and I'm confident you won't decline my offer."
"But I do decline," Elise stated firmly, her gaze steady and unwavering. "I refuse."
Surprise flickered briefly in Patrick's sharp eyes.
