Cora Bennett appeared slightly timid. "Hello."
Months had passed since she joined the Levine family, yet high society life remained unfamiliar. She approached everything with caution, which paradoxically made her seem self-assured.
Like now—after greeting Nathan Davis, she fell silent, creating an awkward pause.
"Oh, you." Yulia Davis smoothly intervened. "Usually so talkative, but struck mute by a handsome face?"
Nathan started to protest, but Nancy Levine spoke first. "My apologies. I've been overly protective of Cora, keeping her sheltered. It's made her rather shy."
"Bring her along anytime. Nathan's schedule is always open—perfect for keeping her company."
"Open schedule? I'm constantly busy," Nathan argued.
"Busy doing what? Drinking away your days?" Yulia retorted, stripping him of dignity.
With no chance to argue before the crowd, Nancy quickly said, "Well, Nathan, I'm trusting you to look after Cora."
Nathan remained silent, earning a sharp elbow from his mother.
"Fine," he grumbled reluctantly.
Andrew Saunders and Ethan Parker observed nearby, exchanging knowing glances.
The setup was obvious—an arranged marriage in motion!
"Speaking of which, Nancy—I heard Cora is entering the entertainment industry?" Yulia shifted topics.
"Yes," Nancy confirmed. "We just returned from her audition, otherwise we wouldn't be so late."
"How did it go?"
"Quite well. There shouldn't be any major issues," Nancy said.
"Of course. They'd have to be more accommodating with you there," Yulia teased, though Nancy didn't deny it.
Suddenly, Nancy turned to Ethan. "Ethan, you've been in the industry awhile. What's your opinion of Kermit Wadle?"
"As a director, he's among the rare few who maintains low visibility while delivering consistent excellence. Anyone in his projects easily achieves breakthroughs," Ethan gave an earnest assessment.
"That's reassuring," Nancy said, genuine concern in her voice. "I was worried his lack of fame might hinder Cora's career development."
Ethan pressed his lips together—back when Elizabeth York was still Nancy's daughter, Nancy had never shown interest in her entertainment career.
Elizabeth had to carve her own path, building her career through blood and sweat.
Now, it was all stripped away.
Unfamiliar with industry nuances, Nancy continued questioning Ethan. "Kermit suggested Cora start with a supporting role instead. He said taking a lead immediately could damage her reputation and growth if she can't handle the pressure. Is that accurate?"
"Yes, that approach would benefit her long-term career development," Ethan nodded.
Despite the conversation, he maintained emotional distance.
"Do you have any upcoming projects? Keep Cora in mind if you find suitable roles," Nancy requested, as if it were natural.
Ethan didn't commit, offering only a noncommittal response.
Even so, he would never show Cora preferential treatment.
"Ethan, you really should reconcile with your father. It's been months—he's cooled down but too proud to ask you back. Your room remains untouched," Nancy suddenly attempted mediation.
Ethan coolly replied, "That's my personal matter. I'll handle it myself."
Nancy naturally dropped the subject—family disputes weren't appropriate at another's birthday celebration.
The group engaged in pleasant small talk before moving to the dining table.
Cora was seated beside Nathan.
Though Nathan never directly looked at her, both Andrew and Ethan could clearly see Cora's interest in him.
