Chapter 17: Chapter 17

Even now, in this dire situation, Wendy was thinking about Ethan.

Why not let him know? Someone like Ethan should live with regret for the rest of his life, consumed by guilt, never finding peace.

But Susan understood, Wendy never wanted Ethan's pity.

Sniffling, Susan wiped her nose and nodded. "Alright, I promise you."

Wendy looked up at the glaring surgical lights and slowly closed her eyes.

Wendy's frail body was hooked up to various machines and tubes. Pre-surgery for liver cancer required special preparations. When Susan saw the test results, her eyes reddened even more.

The data was terrible, indicating that Wendy's condition was deteriorating much faster than expected.

How did it come to this?

Susan immediately thought of Ethan waiting outside the operating room.

She bit down hard to suppress the seething anger within her.

The long surgery was not successful; it barely saved Wendy's life, and even that was hanging by a thread.

Wendy was moved to the ICU for observation. If she didn't recover within 48 hours, she would be in danger again.

The operating room door opened, and Susan walked out, removing her mask and glaring sharply at Ethan.

Ethan tried to step forward to ask about Wendy, but his feet felt like they were weighed down with lead. He couldn't even move an inch.

Susan approached him, and Ethan, with a heavy voice, asked, "How is she?"

Susan suddenly raised her fist and punched Ethan in therface with all her strength, causing him to stagger back a few steps.

He turned his head, his hands clenched into fists at his sides, and repeated his question, "How is Wendy?"

"Thanks to you, she's not dead, but she's lost half her life, almost taken by death."

Susan's words pierced his throat like a steel needle, causing a dull pain that made Ethan's vision blur and his breathing difficult.

Seeing Ethan's pained expression, Susan sarcastically said,"Ethan, you're the one responsible for this. What right do you have to act all heartbroken here? Wendy doesn't need you to worry about her anymore. You should go care for your lover instead."

The person Susan referred to was, of course,Lydia.

"Wendy is my wife. What right do you have to interfere in our matters?"

"Wife?" Susan laughed bitterly at the word.

If it weren't for the fact that they were in a hospital, she would have beaten this bastard to the ground.

"Ethan, ask yourself, have you ever treated Wendy like your wife? Where were you when she fainted from exhaustion? Where were you when she

went to the hospital alone for check-ups?"

Susan pointed at his chest, listing his wrongdoings one by one. "You were out with your mistress, drinking and having fun, while crushing Wendy's heart bit by bit!"

Tears welled up in Susan's eyes. She hated Ethan, bu shealso hated herself. If she had cared more about Wendy, her liver disease wouldn't have progressed to cancer.

Susan's breathing trembled. She had held back for a long time but couldn't stop her voice from choking.

"I regret not stopping Wendy from being with you. If she hadn't been with you, her health wouldn't have deteriorated like this."

Susan thought of Wendy in the ICU, her liver ravaged by cancer cells, and remembered three years ago when Wendy had excitedly told her she was marrying Ethan.

Back then, Wendy could never have imagined it would come to this.

Susan shook her head. "Ethan, you're a bastard!"

Ethan stood silently, wanting to argue but finding no words.

His heart felt like it had been struck by a powerful force, leaving him dazed for a long time.

He looked at Susan but then shifted his gaze to the ICU door behind her.He wanted to see Wendy.

He had never longed to see someone so desperately in his life.

"Ethan, do you love Wendy?" Susan asked.

Love? The word was heavy.

If he loved Wendy, he should have cherished her, not let her struggle alone in exhaustion, not let her suffer in silence while he was indifferent.not flirt with another woman.

Saying he loved her was downright laughable. How could he possibly loved Wendy? What was Wendy to him anyway?

To him, she was just something he possessed, nothing more.

Ethan didn't answer Susan. Instead, he followed the nurse to Wendy's room, looking lost.

Susan watched him coldly, her eyes still wet.

She turned to go back and gather Wendy's things left in the operating room, only to be blocked by someone.

Susan looked up in surprise, meeting a pair of deep, intense eyes.

The man was tall and handsome, with sharp features and an air of authority.

Susan frowned slightly. "Who are you looking for?"

She didn't remember knowing such a distinguished-looking man.

"Are you a doctor?"

"Yes," Susan replied, a bit puzzled.

"Are you responsible for Wendy?"

"Yes,why?"

"How is she now?"

"Who are you? What's your relationship with Wendy? Why should I tell you?" Susan was very cautious. Although this man looked wealthy and powerful, she couldn't be careless when it cameto Wendy.

"I saved her. Isn't it reasonable for a savior to ask aboutsthe condition of the person they saved?"

Hearing this, Susan was stunned. He saved Wendy?

She scrutinized Alexander for a moment, still not fully trusting him."Where did you save her from?"

"The Knight Villa," Alexander replied, looking at Susan.

Susan nodded. Since he could mention Wendy's old house, he should be trustworthy.

"Come with me. Her situation is complicated. I'll explain while I'clean up the operating room."

Susan led Alexander into the operating room.

The room was filled with the smell of disinfectant and blood, causing Alexander to momentarily lose focus.

Susan found a plastic basin on a shelf, containing the remnants from Wendy's stomach. There was no food, only blood.

As she cleaned, Susan choked up. "This is what was in Wendy's stomach. She hadn't eaten for days, which caused severe stomach bleeding."

Alexander's brow furrowed tightly, a sharp pain piercing his heart.

She had been starved for days.

He couldn't imagine what Wendy had gone through in those days.

Why did Ethan treat her so cruelly?

He wanted to confront Ethan, even beat him up.

But they were the married couple, and to Wendy, he was just a stranger she had met three times.

Swallowing his rage, he asked, "Besides the stomach bleeding, does she have any other conditions?"

When he rescued Wendy, she didn't look like someone who was just starved. She seemed gravely ill, barely clinging to life.
