Chapter 20: Chapter 20

Nina dropped her head and started pacing, her mind racing for a solution.

After a while, her expression shifted a few times. Then she suddenly turned to Karen with a weird question. "Have you noticed how Chris's attitude towards that useless Amelia has changed lately?"

Karen burst out laughing, "Mom, are you serious? I'd sooner believe that bitch Amelia would get hit by a car the moment she steps outside!"

She crossed her arms and gave Nina a look like she was crazy.

Nina ignored her rudeness and muttered to herself, "No matter what, we should give it a shot."

Meanwhile, Amelia got a call from Victor's assistant, asking her to come back to the Spencer Mansion over the weekend because Victor wanted to see her.

Amelia hesitated.

Victor was one of the few people who treated her well, but he was always busy and rarely home. Whenever he came home, he'd hear about her awful situation with Chris from others and then harshly scold Chris.

Every time that happened, her life got even harder. But she hadn't seen Victor in over two months. Should she go? Maybe she should, just to say goodbye. He'd find out about her divorce from Chris sooner or later anyway,

But after work that day, Amelia happened to see the person she both

loved and hated in the employee passage behind the restauant.

Chris was leaning against his car, eyes slightly narrowed, giving her a half-smile.

Amelia pretended not to see him.

"Stop," Chris ordered.

Amelia quickened her pace, but he easily caught up to her, grabbed her arm, and forced her to look at him.

"What do you want?" Amela felt flustered just being near him.

She had made up her mind to leave him and hoped not to see him again.

Otherwise, she feared she couldn't bear to leave him.

Chris pressed his lips together, irritated by Amelia's impatience.

"You didn't used to treat ine with this kind of attitude. Do you need me to remind you?" Chris asked.

Amelia sighed and asked patiently, "What do you want? Just say it."

She took a few steps away from Chris, silently distancing herself from him.

Chris narrowed his eyes but surprisingly didn't get angry at her small action. He lazily said, "Getting bolder? Do you really think I can't do anything to you?"

"How could you possibly be powerless against me? At your commnand,1might be dead. The fact that I'm standing here unharmed is solely due to your excessive leniency," she mocked, shaking off his hand.

"Tomorrow, I'm going back to the Spencer Mansion. I'm warning you,

Grandpa is coming back, and you..."

Chris raised an eyebrow and smiled, his eyes dark and dangerous. "Grandpa already had someone notify you, saving me the trouble."

So,he came to block her today for this reason. But it was strange.Even if he had something to tell her, he could have just sent a message or an email, or sent someone else to notify her, like many times before. Why did he come in person? Was he here to cause trouble?

"Remember this," Chris stepped closer, his voice particularly cold. "Yoưbetter keep the secret from Grandpa. If he finds out anything..."

He didn't finish the sentence. Because he knew better than anyone that Amelia, who valued relationships, wouldn't do that.

Amelia's eyes were a bit sore as she took two steps back. "Finished? If you're done, I'm leaving."

She felt very unwell, her head occasionally dizzy, and her breathing becoming rapid. She just wanted to leave quickly.

"In such a hurry to meet that Shawn?" Chris grabbed her wrist. "A worthless person like him suits you well.".

Was he losing it again? What kind of nonsense was he spouting now?

Amelia felt numb. It was no longer surprising how badly he thought of her.

Just then, Shawn's voice cut through the tension, "Let her go!"

Amelia's back stiffened. Why was he here?

"Let me go!" She tried to shake off Chris's grip, but he was too strong.

Chris tightened his hold, like he was going to crush her wrist.

"You like him so much that you're willing to divorce me for him?" Chris questioned.

Amelia felt helpless, like her fate was out of her hands. She gave a bitter smile. "Yes, I'm doing it for him. Are you satisfied?"

Chris said, "Don't forget; we haven't.." Before he could finish, Amelia cut him off,"So what?"

Amelia knew she shouldn't provoke him, but she couldn't hold back any more. "So what if we haven't divorced? In my heart, you're no longer my husband!"

Their eyes locked, and she could see herself reflected in his pupils. But she couldn't read his emotions. His grip slowly loosened.

She took the chance to break free and ran without looking back.

Shawn had been trailing behind her and finally caught up to walk by her side.

"Are you okay?" His voice was anxious and cautious.

Amelia was about to answer when she suddenly felt dizzy, and everything went dark. She screamed in fear and collapsed, tears streaming down her face.

"What's wrong with you?" Shawn was shocked, trying to help her. Seeing her tears, he was at a loss and cautiously asked, "Where do you feel unwell? I'll take you to the hospital."

Amelia covered her eyes, trembling. She was terrified that when she

opened them again, the world would still be dark.

"I'm fine..." She tried to suppress her panic, groping to get up, and slowly opened her eyes.

Oh God, it was still dark. Amelia's tears kept falling.

She closed her eyes in pain, desperately thinking about what to do.

"Tll take you to the hospital." Shawn's voice was genle as he approached her, "Don't worry. I'll help you."

At this moment, he was the only one who had seen her most vulnerable side. And now, she could only accept his help.

They quickly went to the hospital, where Shawn used his family's influence to get an appointment with the top doctor.

The doctor examined her, and through the use of medication, her vision was restored. However, the situation remained far from optimistic.

"Míss Tudor, your condition is now critical and greatly affected by your emotional state. I strongly recommend undergoing surgery as soon as possible," the doctor said.

"What is the success rate of the surgery?" Amelia asked, surprisingly calm.

The doctor thought for a moment and said, "With our hospital's current capabilities, there's a 40% success rate. If you delay, the success rate will continue to decrease,"

In other words, the surgery had a high chance of failure, resulting in permanent blindness.

But if she didn't have the surgery, the probability of permanent blindness

would be 100%.

"When is the earliest we can schedule the surgery?" Shawn asked.

"Within three days," the doctor estimated, then he said to Amelia, "If the surgery is in three days, you'll need to be hospitalized for tests in the next two days."

"No." Amelia shook her head, "I have things to do in the next two days. Please give me some medication for now."

"What else could be more important than your health?" Shawn was puzzled and angry.
