Chapter 31: Chapter 31

"No way, this is impossible!" Amelia's face went ghostly white, and she almost crumpled to the floor.

She stared at him, wide-eyed, "Mr. Howard, I trust you completely. If you said the sky was green, I'd believe you. But this..."

She shook her head, tears streaming down her cheeks.

How could it be true?

For three years, Chris had been humiliating her. And every single day, he and everyone else kept telling her that he didn't love her.

But now,Lucius was saying Chris had jumped into the sea for her and got seriously hurt.

"You might not believe it, but it's the truth," Lucius said, not surprised by her reaction.

"Or you could check your phone. The news is all over the place; you just haven't been keeping up."

Saying she wasn't keeping up was an understatement; she hadn't even turned on her phone in days.

"Mr. Howard, can I trust you?" Amelia's hands were shaking. She took a deep breath and looked at the composed Lucius, feeling lost.

Lucius smiled gently, "That's up to you, not me."

Amelia finally lost all her strength and collapsed onto the sofa.

"Maybe he still cares about you," Lucius said in a deep, convincing voice.

Amelia was in a daze for a long time before she suddenly looked up, "Mr.Howard, I'm sorry, I suddenly feel very unwell and can't talk to you anymore. Could you please leave?"

Her long-held beliefs had shattered, and she needed time to process it.

After Lucius left, Amelia charged her phone and turned it on.

Messages flooded in. Many people had called and texted her, but Amelia ignored them all. She opened various news apps and found that the reports were consistent: Chris was indeed injured and hospitalized.

Her heart was in turmoil.

At this moment, her phone rang. It was Victor.

"Amelia, thank goodness you finally turned on your phone. Where are you? Come back immediately, Chris's condition is terrible, you..."

"Which hospital is he in? I'll go see him right away." She cut him off, anxious.

A few minutes later, she changed her clothes and stepped out of her ward.

"Please tell Mr. Howard that my plan will be postponed for now," Amelia said to one of Lucius's subordinates.

She took a cab straight to the Spencer family's private hospital, where Victor's subordinates met her outside.

"Grandpa!" The moment she saw Victor, Amelia's tears flowed freely.

"Dear, I've finally gotten to see you. How are you? I heard about the incident that day. Were you rescued? What has happened these past few days?" Victor turned her around to check her over, and seeing that she

had no obvious injuries, he finally felt a bit relieved.

"I'm fine, someone saved me. I've been resting these days. Grandpa, I want to see Chris," Amelia said urgently.

"Mr. Spencer, get her out of here!" Suddenly, a sharp female voice came from the end of the hallway.

It was Leila.

"This is all her scheme. If it weren't for her, Chris wouldn't have had an accident. It's all because of her, she's a jinx!"

Leila was angrily accusing before she even walked over, her voice sharp and loud.

Victor's face became grim, "Ms. Ross, you seem to have forgotten that Amelia is Chris's wife."

Leila, who had clearly promised him not to come back, had gone back on her word, which was truly despicable.

"But I'm the one who has been taking care of him these days. I can't just stand by and watch Chris get hurt by her again!" Leila threw down what she was holding and strode over.

"Enough." Victor's gaze darkened.

The butler beside him immediately said, "Ms. Ross, if you continue to obstruct Ms. Spencer, we will have to ask you to leave."

Leila was stunned, gritting her teeth in frustration, "Mr. Spencer, Chris chose to save me that day,he should..."

"Ms. Ross, you have no right to say these things in front of me." Victor

gave her a meaningful look, his gaze piercing.

Leila stiffened, recalling the incident from a few years ago,and swallowed her words.

But she thought to herself, even if she had taken the money and left back then, so what? Chris loved her. Now that she was back, she had to reclaim her lover, and no one could stop her.

Meanwhile, Amelia had already entered the ward.

"Chris." Amelia's breath caught the moment she saw Chris.

It turned out that the photos didn't do justice to the real thing. The person lying on the hospital bed looked nothing like the Chris she knew.

Amelia even thought this must be some cruel prank to make her a laughingstock.

But it was Chris, and he was seriously injured.

Amelia stood still for a long time before she could accept this and slowly walked over.

"Chris." She called out in a trembling voice, but there was no response.

He was thinner and more haggard, his face sharply defined, making her heart ache.

"Grandpa, how is he? What did the doctor say?" Amelia rushed out to ask Victor.

Victor sighed, "He was bitten by a shark on his leg, and there are torn wounds on his chest and back. Plus, he was in the sea for a long time, leading to his coma. The doctor said he needs at least one or two months

of treatment to wake up."

Amelia's mind went blank, and she was completely stunned.

"Amelia, stay and take care of him, okay? Although your relationship was a bit strained before, it's normal for couples to argue occasionally. He needs you now," V/ictor said softly.

Amelia knew she wouldn't be able to leave for a while.

She forced a smile and nodded, "I see, Grandpa. You should go rest. I'll handle things here."

Victor was also very tired, sustained only by his worry. Now that Amelia was here,he could finally relax a bit.

"Amelia, you fell into the sea, why aren't you dead? Why did you come back? Getout of here right now!" As soon as Victor left, Leila appeared.

She crossed her arms and looked down at Amelia with resentment.

Amelia didn't argue with her. She quietly sat bythe bed, using a damp hot towel to wipe Chris's hands.

His body was covered in thick bandages. She couldn't imagine how he had endured it.

"You bitch, I'm talking to you. Are you deaf or mute?" Leila was angry, then laughed, "Oh, right, you're almost blind, so it must be affecting your hearing too."

Amelia glanced at her indifferently, "Aren't you afraid I'll shout for the bodyguards to throw you out? Or tell them that you were the one who harmed Chris?"

Leila was unfazed, "All the evidence points to you. Even if you explain to others, no one would believe you."

"As long as Grandpa believes me, you would be kicked out." She paused, thinking that Chris might want Leila to stay, and said softly, "If you want to stay here,be quiet."

"I can stay as long as I want. It's not up to you!"

Amelia didn't want to argue anymore, "I don't want to be here with you..Since Grandpa agreed to let you stay, how about this: you take one day,and I'll take the next."

"No way, I have to see Chris every day!" Leila said angrily, "He's in this mess because of you. If he wakes up and sees you, he might faint again.".

"Either agree, or I'll tell Grandpa the truth." Amelia coldly left this sentence and walked out.

Leila was furious, her face turning pale, but she was afraid Amelia would go to Victor, so she reluctantly agreed.

At night, Amelia sat quietly on the sofa, looking through the photos she had locked in her phone.

They were all photos she had secretly taken of Chris.

She had started having a crush on him when she was very young.

Over the years, she had secretly taken hundreds of photos of him, mostly of his back, with a few side profiles.

These photos recorded all his stages from his teenage years to not long ago, from a young boy to a mature and cold man.

A tear suddenly fell from her eye.

Amelia was momentarily dazed.

Could it be that she hadn't been in total despair and that her love for him had rekindled?

But she was clearly deeply hurt.

Amelia wiped away her tears and told herself, this was the last time.

She didn't like owing favors. She would do this to repay him.
