Chapter 40: Chapter 40

She never thought she'd get such a shock while waiting for the doctor.

Amelia quietly deleted the photos, but each one felt like it was burned into her memory.

Out of nowhere, a sharp pain hit her stomach.

She couldn't take it and slid off the sofa.

"What's wrong with her?" Lucius asked, standing by the hospital bed.

"She became extremely upset and almost had a miscarriage. Luckily, I gave her some meds in time to save the baby," the doctor said seriously.

"Upset?" Lucius repeated, "Was it Chris again?"

His black-clad assistant stepped up, whispered something in his ear.

"Leila?" Lucius sneered, "I'm not surprised."

"She came out of Chris's room today, looking all down, like she failed."

"But she still managed to upset this little kitten." Lucius glanced at Amelia's pale face, "Go warn Leila to back off."

The assistant quietly left.

In the big,sterile-smelling room, it was just the two of them.

Lucius sat by Amelia for a long time, staring at her delicate face, his mind racing.

He couldn't help but thinkhow different Amelia was from Bella.

They had no connection, nothing in common.

But sometimes, he saw a flicker of familiarity in Amelia's eyes.

Lucius looked away and took a deep breath.

He was a strategist.

He couldn't let a pawn mess with his head.

Even if he did feel a bit guilty and sorry for this pawn.

"Mr. Howard?" When Amelia woke up, she saw Lucius's familiar face and thought she was dreaming.

"You're awake?" Lucius hid his emotions, stood up calmly, and touched her forehead, "The fever's gone, feeling better?"

Amelia nodded gratefully, "Much better, thank you, Mr. Howard."

Lucius sighed, "You should thank yourself. Luckily, you're in good health, which saved the baby."

"What?" Amnelia's face went pale, and she instinctively covered her belly,"What happened to my baby?"

"It was a close call," Lucius said seriously, "You're not alone now, you need to be more careful."

Amelia's tears started falling.

Hadn't she been careful enough? Why did people keep messing with her?

"What's your plan?" Lucius asked.

"I don't know." Her mind was a mess, "I need to settle down my dad first.

Chris has him under control, I can't just leave him."

"He's already out." Lucius smiled gently, "He was discharged yesterday morning and is back with your mom and sister."

Amelia looked shocked, "Is that true? I haven't heard from him."

"Stop hesitating. I'll give you a day to think about it." Lucius said and then got up to leave.

Should she leave?

Amelia's mind was spinning.

Those two had already slept together, what was she holding on to?

She then made up her mind.

Lucius was efficient and already arranged the nearest flight to Zephyria for her, three days later.

Amelia wanted to see her dad one last time.

She set up a meeting with Paxton at a restaurant.

"Dad, have some more. You've lost so much weight from being in the hospital." Amelia kept piling food onto Paxton's plate, which was already overflowing.

Paxton looked at her with concern, "You're the one who's lost weight.Look at your face, it's so thin. Have you been through tough things recently?"

Amelia's face tightened for a moment but then softened, "Dad, I'm doing fine. I got a new job, and my boss and coworkers are great. I'm much

happier now. But I have to go out of town in a few days."

"Where to? Why?" Paxton asked, worried.

Amelia held his hand, "My boss wants me to go on a business trip for a week. Don't worry. But I'm only telling you this, don't tell anyone else, especially not Mom, okay?"

Paxton knew his wife didn't like Amelia and sighed deeply, "You have your own life, I get it. I won't cause you any trouble."

As they parted, Amelia watched Paxton walk away, feeling a mix of emotions.

She took a cab to go back.

On the way, her mind was filled with thoughts of Paxton's graying hair, and she felt a deep sadness. Tears welled up in her eyes.

But there was a silver lining; she was finally going to leave everything behind.

"Hey, what's going on? That car's been following us and trying to cut us off!" The driver suddenly spoke up, annoyed.

Amelia snapped back to reality,"What's wrong,一Sir?"

She turned to look out the window.

She saw a car behind them trying to sideswipe their car, moving quickly, clearly up to no good.

Amelia felt a sense of dread.

"Sir, let's avoid it," shesaid.

The driver, however, was agitated, "No one on this street can cut me off.Hold on, I'll get us away from that car!"

"Don't, please drive steadily..." She hadn't finished her sentence when a strong pushback sensation hit her. She hurriedly grabbed the seatbelt, "Don't do this, slow down, Sir, I'm scared!"

The driver was confident, "What are you afraid of? I'm the best driver in our circle, just relax!"

Before he finished speaking, the car was hit from behind, sliding forward fifteen feet. The most dangerous part was that they were already on a bridge over the river.

There was a rushing river below!

"Damn it, how dare they hit my car? Do they have a death wish?" The driver was furious, reversing ten feet, trying to retaliate.

But at that moment, a car in front suddenly crashed into them.

The driver had no time to react, a strong force hit them.

The next second, they were airborne, and a strong sense of weightlessness surrounded them.

As the car hit the water, Amelia felt the breath of death.

How could this happen?

She instinctively protected her belly, but the feeling of despair was overwhelming.

She had just decided to start a new life.

Why?

"Miss, are you okay? Grab my hand!" The driver had already escaped through the window, trying to pull Amelia out.
