He'd always had this monotone, unreadable way of talking, keeping everyone at arm's length. But right now, there was a surprising hint of curiosity in his voice.
Amelia suddenly lost her appetite.
She gave him a smile that didn't reach her eyes."That's not true," Lucius said flatly. "Bella just got back and needs to focus on running the gallery. We're not thinking about marriage or kids right now. But you two, you're different."
As he spoke, his eyes flicked over to Diana.
"Indeed. Chris is reaching the age where he should be settling down and getting married ," Diana said in a dignified tone, glancing at Amelia and Lucius with a half-smile. "Lucius, since you've waited for Ms. White for so long, why not tie the knot soon? Your dad will be thrilled and won't have to wvorry about you all the time."
Victor immediately jumped in, waving his hand. "Since we're talking weddings, why don't both couples get engaged together? Wouldn't that be perfect?"
Amelia was stunned. How could Victor just casually decide on marriage like that?
"Sure, it would be my pleasure," Leila agreed with a smile.
But the other three main characters stayed silent.
Even Chris, who usually spoke his mind, kept quiet and loo
Lucius also turned to look at Amelia, seemingly seeking her opinion.
Noticing that Amelia wasn't going to react, Lucius had to step in. "Dad, we're not in a rush."
"I'm not in a rush either," Chris said right after Lucius, with a meaningful smile.
"Chris, what are you..." Lela's face fell, grabbing Chris's arm hastily.
Chris gave her a slight look. and Leila swallowed the rest of her words.
After the family dinner.
"You must have an incredible amount of endurance, sticking with someone who betrayed you," Chris cornered Amelia, away from the others.
He had dropped his earlier cold and noble act, now full of aggression.
Amelia nervously glanced around, relieved that no one else was in the garden under the night sky.
"Are you crazy?" Amelia lowered her voice and glared at him. "Aren't you afraid Mr. Victor Spencer will find out?"
Chris grabbed her shoulder maliciously, sneering, "Afraid? What do I have to be afraid of? At worst, I'll tell Grandpa that I can lower my standards for you."
"Shut up!" Amelia quickly covered his mouth, warning, "You shameless jerk, I still care about my reputation!"
Chris was simply mad. He was like a loose cannon, never following the rules.
"What reputation do you have left? You've done everything to get close to me. I admit, you're different from before. You better know when to stop, or.
"Or what?" Amelia looked impatient, "Do you think you're that popular?"
She looked him up and down with disdain, "How do you compare to Lucius?"
"You..." Chris was provoked, his gaze darkened, and he gripped Amelia's shoulder hard.
The last thing he wanted was to be compared to Lucius.
Amelia winced in pain but still looked at him calmly, as if saying, "Is this all you can do?"
"He betrayed you," Chris gritted his teeth, "Are you so pathetic that you can't live without him?”
"Then what can I do?" Amelia pushed him away forcefully, retreating to a safe distance, tears welling up in her eyes. "I can only rely on him. Who else would genuinely protect me besides him? Do you expect me to rely on you?"
"Why can't you rely on me? Whatever he can do, I can do too." Chris's face turned pale, realizing he had misspoken in his haste.
But Amelia still didn't give him a satisfactory answer.
That night, everyone was supposed to crash at The Spencer Mansion.
Amelia went back to her room, freshened up, and was surprised to find an unexpected visitor in her temporary bedroom.
It was Diana.
She and Leila really looked like mother and daughter, their demeanor and gestures seemed to be cut from the same cloth.
A few years ago, when Amelia was part of the Spencer family, Diana had publicly declared more than once that Amelia was just a gold digger who seduced Chris into marrying her. Not even the servants gave her any respect.
Most of the humiliation Amelia endured back then was thanks to Diana.
"Mrs. Spencer, what brings you here?" Seeing Diana, she didn't bother to get up.
"Do you have any manners? An elder comes to talk to you, and you don't even say a polite word?" Diana snorted, plopping down on the sofa.
Amelia quietly flipped through the book in her hand, not even lifting her eyelids. "Mrs. Spencer, you barged in without knocking. What kind of manners is that?"
"You really are a sharp-tongued girl, no wonder you have our Chris wrapped around your finger," Diana sneered, staring straight at Amelia. "Since you're Lucius' girlfriend, you should behave yourself. But you keep flirting with others, what are you up to?"
"Honestly, I'm aiming to be a wealthy wife. If I marry Mr. Howard or Chris one day, I can be as arrogant as you and mistreat others," Amelia still didn't look at Diana directly.
She was afraid that if she met Diana's eyes, those painful mnem resurface, revealing her inner resentment.
"I knew you had bad intentions! Get out of here immediately!" Diana totally lost her cool, pointing at her nose. "This is The Spencer Mansion,we can't tolerate a slut like you."
"Fine. I'll tell Mr. Victor Spencer that I'm leaving," Amelia said, putting down her book, clapping her hands as if dusting off nonexistent dirt, and grabbed her bag to leave.
Luckily, she hadn't changed into her pajamas yet. Otherwise, going to change clothes at a time like this would completely undermine her presence.
"Stop!" Diana's face changed again. "What are you going to tell him?"
If Amelia left now, wouldn't Victor come after her?
Amelia crossed her arms, looking helpless. "Just that you don't want me here, what else?"
Diana's wvell-maintained face showed anger and disbelief. At this moment.she suddenly believed that this person was not the old Amelia.
Amelia was weak and a pushover, while Bella was sharp-tongued and vengeful.
"Mrs. Spencer, your son isn't as popular as you think. Excuse me for not seeing you out, please leave," Amelia raised her eyebrows lightly, effortlessly driving her away.
Undoubtfully, she completely offended Diana that night.
The next morning, as soon as she got back to the gallery, she got a call from Chris, asking why she had pissed off Diana.
Amelia. of course. had no good attitude, recounting the conversation word for word. making Chris so angry that his voice changed.
After hanging up the phone, Amelia, Sophia, and Owen happily started having snacks.
She had specially placed a high-difficulty puzzle in her office that Owen liked, so he could stay occupied for at least an hour or two.
"Mom,when can we go back? I miss Olivia," Owen asked, showing Amelia the completed map puzzle, posing a question that was hard to answer.
