Jenna Roland opened her eyes to find Liam Melford and an unfamiliar woman standing before her. The sharp scent of disinfectant filled the air as medical equipment hummed around her.
"Dr. Melford, where am I?" She pushed herself up, her fingers brushing against the cold hospital sheets.
Liam adjusted his glasses. "The ER. Zoe and I found you unconscious in the hallway."
Memories flooded back—waiting outside the operating room. She massaged her temples. "Thank you."
Zoe studied her curiously. "You seem healthy. What caused the fainting spell?"
A loud stomach growl answered for her.
Jenna's ears burned. "I... haven't eaten all day." Her grip tightened on the blanket. "Milo was in surgery. I couldn't leave."
Liam's expression shifted. "The operation was successful. You should focus on your own health now."
Zoe brightened. "I'll grab food. You shouldn't be walking around like this."
"No need." Jenna waved her phone. "I'll order delivery."
Years of caring for her brother alone had taught her to never rely on others.
Liam said nothing, simply gesturing for Zoe to follow him out.
The ICU waiting room bench felt like ice. As Jenna opened the delivery app, Zoe reappeared.
"Here." She dropped two fruit candies into Jenna's palm. "For the low blood sugar."
The crinkling wrappers sounded unnaturally loud in the quiet hallway.
Inside the elevator, Zoe smirked. "Since when do you play nurse, Dr. Melford?"
Last month, he'd stepped over a fainting patient without breaking stride.
His reflection in the metal doors remained impassive. "Professional habit."
"Really?" Zoe arched a brow. "Then why specifically ask me to deliver candy?"
The doors slid shut, muffling his reply: "She reminds me of someone."
