Jenna's fingers twisted the hem of her shirt when the call connected.
"Officer Hill, it's Jenna Roland." Her voice was deliberately hushed. "We met at the police station."
Liam's steady baritone came through the receiver. "I remember. What's wrong?"
She drew a sharp breath. "My friend used to be Lucien Valois's mistress. After Yvonne found out, she sent men to kidnap her. They nearly killed her."
Her nails dug into her palms as she stared at the sterile hospital walls.
"Now she's in the hospital, and someone tried to murder her again." Jenna's voice trembled. "The perpetrator has powerful connections. Are we really out of options?"
A faint clink of glass being set down sounded through the phone.
"Evidence?" Liam's tone turned grave. "Kidnapping, attempted murder—we need solid proof."
Jenna bit her lower lip. "Everyone knows it's Yvonne. Only hospital staff had this room number, yet the assassin found her instantly."
The rustle of flipping papers carried through the line.
"The law only cares about evidence." A lighter clicked as Liam lit a cigarette. "Audio recordings, video footage, eyewitnesses—we need it all."
"But she has the mayor backing her!" Jenna's voice cracked.
Smoke laced Liam's quiet chuckle. "The higher they climb, the harder they fall. Find me proof, and I'll handle this personally."
Jenna's head snapped up, fire igniting in her eyes.
"Deal." Each word was deliberate. "We'll get you the evidence."
After hanging up, she pushed open the hospital room door.
Sylvia sat motionless, staring at the IV drip.
"The police need proof." Jenna took her icy hand.
Sylvia gave a bitter smile. "We're prisoners in this room. Where would we even look?"
Jenna leaned close, whispering in her ear.
"What?" Sylvia's eyes widened. "That's too dangerous!"
"It's our only shot." Jenna's gaze burned with determination. "We have to force her to show her hand."
Sylvia watched the darkening sky outside the window before nodding slowly.
Two shadows melted into the blackness of the hospital corridor as night descended.
