Chapter 45: Chapter 46

"Don't fret. I won't let you suffer the consequences of this," Alexander reassured.

Victoria managed a faint smile through her tears. She knew Alexander wasn’t the type to make empty promises. If he gave his word, he always followed through.

Minutes later, Gregory stood outside another hospital room. He had discovered that the driver of the car that collided with Victoria's was inside. Naturally, Alexander wouldn’t personally deal with such matters.

Gregory knocked and entered.

Meanwhile, Alexander lingered in the hallway and dialed Amy again. Just like yesterday, there was only silence. An unfamiliar frustration simmered within him.

He was about to redial when Gregory emerged, his expression troubled.

"Why the rush? Did they refuse to take responsibility?" Alexander asked, pausing mid-motion.

Gregory hesitated before speaking. "Mr. Blackwood... you might want to see this for yourself."

Gregory was an exceptional assistant, capable of handling such situations effortlessly. If he suggested Alexander intervene, it had to be serious.

Curious, Alexander pushed open the door—and froze. His gaze locked onto the woman sitting on the hospital bed. "Amy? What are you doing here?"

Amy had already learned from Gregory why Alexander had come. His arrival didn’t surprise her in the least.

Propped against the bed, her face pale with faint scabs on her forehead, she regarded him with icy detachment. "Mr. Blackwood, you already know why I’m here. The reason for your visit is probably clearer to you than to me."

Alexander’s eyes narrowed dangerously. "You’re the one who hit Victoria?"

Amy shrugged, her tone indifferent. "Yeah."

The realization struck Alexander like a physical blow. His sharp gaze flickered, the certainty in his eyes wavering like a flame in the wind.

"When you called me yesterday..." His voice was tight, each word clipped. "You were in the car?"

Amy’s voice remained calm, revealing nothing. "When you rescued Ms. Langley, my foot was trapped. I called you for help too."

But he had hung up. If he had just glanced in her direction, he would have seen her. Instead, his focus had been entirely on Victoria, oblivious to anyone else.

Was she disappointed? No. She had long stopped expecting anything from him. But the feeling of being abandoned in a life-or-death situation was something she never wanted to relive.

"I’m sorry," Alexander said quietly. "I didn’t know you were there."

Amy let out a humorless laugh. "Right. You didn’t know I was there too. You assumed my call was trivial, so you hung up without hesitation. Because..."

She met his gaze squarely. "In your world, I just don’t matter enough."

At that moment, any explanation would sound like an excuse. Alexander remained silent.

Amy closed her eyes briefly. When she opened them again, they were clear and emotionless. "Mr. Blackwood, if you came to see me, state your business."

It was then that Alexander remembered his original purpose. "Did you crash into Victoria?"
