Chapter 21: Chapter 21

Wendy forced a small smile. "It's nothing, just an accident."

Susan wasn't buying it. She glanced around the messy hospital room and had a pretty good idea of what had happened.

"Are you and him really over?", she asked, unable to hold back.

Wendy lowered her eyes and nodded slightly. "Yeah, we signed the divorce papers. Tomorrow, we're going to court to finalize it. Once the court schedules the hearing, it'll be official."

Susan felt a mix of sadness for Wendy's wasted years and relief that she could finally start anew.

"You've been through so much. From now on, you need to live for yourself,

" Susan said, her voice choked with emotion. her eyes full of concern for Wendy.

Wendy nodded slightly. "I know. I won't be foolish anymore."

Susan gently tucked Wendy's hair behind her ear and comforted her softly.

"I'll go to court with you tomorrow. After that, just focus on getting better and don't worry about anything else."

Wendy felt a warmth in her heart. "Thank you,Susan."

"Don't mention it," Susan said, patting Wendy's shoulder gently. "Wendy, let's not dwell on the past. The most important thing now is to get you healthy. I've talked to some specialists about your condition. They said that while liver cancer is tough. it's not hopeless."

Wendy looked up, a hint of surprise in her eyes. "Really? But my health..."

Before she could finish, a wave of wveakness hit her, and she coughed lightly.

Susan quickly rubbed her back, her heart aching. "Don't lose hope. Medical technology is always advancing. There's a new targeted therapy that's shown good results for patients like you, with fewer side effects. We can try it. It might just control the disease."

Wendy's eyes dimmed a bit, and she shook her head with a bitter smile. "Susan, you know my financial situation. After the divorce, I'll only have two million dollars. The treatment will cost a lot. I'm afraid..."

Susan gripped Wendy's hand tightly and said firmly, "Don't worry about the money. I'll figure it out. Don't forget, you have me, your doctor friend.I'll make sure you get the best treatment without wasting a penny."

Wendy felt a lump in her throat, moved beyond words. "Susan, having a friend like you is a blessing."

Susan gently wiped away Wendy's tears. "What you need to do now is stay strong, cooperate with the treatment, and get back to being a doctor."

Wendy took a deep breath, as if making a big decision. "Alright, I'll listen to you. After we submit the application tomorrow, I'll focus on the treatment."

The next morning, Susan wheeled Wendy to submit the divorce application.

A Porsche had been parked across the street from the courthouse for nearly half an hour. The driver glanced at the man in the back seat when he saw the frail figure in the wheelchair appear.

Ethan sat with his legs crossed, staring out the window at the scene across the street, unmoving.

Wendy was wrapped in a beige trench coat, looking pale and exhausted.

The wind blew her hair into a mess.

Susan stood behind her, gripping the wheelchair handles tightly, trying to shield Wendy from most of the wind.

Wendy kept checking her watch, her frown deepening.

The driver hesitated before speaking. "Mr. Collins, are you still going? Ms.Knight seems to be getting anxious."

Inside the car, Ethan remained still, his expression unreadable.

Lydia, sitting beside him, grew impatient. She gently tugged on Ethan's sleeve and urged him in a sweet voice, "Ethan, it's getting late. Are we going or not? You can't just keep waiting."

She was eager for Ethan to finalize the divorce with Wendy, fearing any complications.

It wasn't until' he saw Wendy shivering from the cold, a look of pain crossing her face, that Ethan finally moved. He opened the car door and stepped out.

Lydia hesitated but stayed in the car. She didn't want tobe seen as the one breaking up their marriage.

It was already eight minutes past the scheduled time of ten o'clock.

'Can't even be on time for a divorce?' Wendy called Ethan, and after three rings, he picked up. Sheasked urgently, "Didn't we agree on ten o'clock?"

Ethan's voice was casual amidst the noise o traffic. "What's the rush?Waiting a few more minutes won't kill you."

Wendy frowned. "I lose a few minutes."

"Your time as a housewife is really precious, huh?" Ethan scoffed."How about I stand outside for a few minutes to wait for you, and we call it even?"

'What kind of ridiculous logic is that?' Wendy was fuming, but Susan had already noticed something. Shesturned slightly to look at the sidewalk.

Ethan's tall, imposing figure was wrapped in a black trenchcoat, blending with the bleak autumn scenery, exuding a cold aura.

He hung up the phone and walked steadily across the street towards Wendy.

When he reached them, Wendy put away her phone and said softly to Susan, "Push me inside. Henry should be here."

They entered the courthouse, and Wendy, still in her wheelchair.immediately saw Henry waiting.

Henry stood up, concern etched on his face as he looked at Wendy. He then handed the signed divorce papers to the court staff.

The staff asked a few routine questions, mostly answered by Wendy.

Ethan spoke little, only responding briefly when necessary, but he was cooperative.

After the paperwork was submitted and registered, the staff informed them,"Your divorce hearing is scheduled for thirty days from now. Please attend the hearing to receive your divorce decree."

As they left the courthouse, Ethan paused slightly and said, "P'll take you

home."
