After Wendy finished explaining things to Henry, the hospital room fell silent.
It wasn't long before Ethan's phone rang loudly, breaking the quiet.
He glanced at the screen and saw itwas Lydia calling. His previously tense expression softened immediately.
Deliberately in front of Wendy, he answered the call, his voice gentle and affectionate, "Hey Lydia, what's up?"
Whatever Lydia was saying on the other end made Ethan smile, and he responded occasionally, completely different from the harsh demeanor he had with Wendy.
Wendy sat on the hospital bed, her gaze drifting to Ethan's back. Though she had grown numb to it, a pang of bitterness still hit her heart.
She hugged the'blanket tighter, as if it could provide her some warmth.
Ethan glanced at Wendy, a cold smile playing on his lips. "Lydia, why don't you move in with me today? Wendy and I are about to sign the divorce papers, so this will be our home soon."
Lydia's excitement was palpable over the phone. "Really? That's great! I'll start packing right away."
Ethan chuckled in response. "Sure."
After hanging up, he turned to Wendy, his face still holding a trace of that gentle smile, and sneered, "Wendy, what about your stuff at my place? You can't just leave it there forever."
Wendy barely lifted her eyes to look at him, then lowered them again, her voice soft, "There's nothing important. Just throw it all away."
Despite the Collins Group's success over the years, she had spent almost every day at home, working like a servant without a break.
There was nothing valuable left, and she didn't wantto see any of it anymore.
The room fell into a brief silence, broken only by the faint beeping of the medical equipment.
Ethan felt a surge of inexplicable anger at Wendy's calm reaction.
He had expected her to argue with him as she used to, but her tranquility now left him feeling stifled.
Wendy took a deep breath, knowing that the end of this marriage was imminent, and she was ready to leave this painful chapter behind.
Ethan's feelings were conflicted. He was eager to sign the papers and gain full control of the Collins Group's assets, but he was also puzzled by Wendy's resolute demeanor, so different from the woman who once loved him so deeply.
As they sat in silence, Henry walked in, startled by Wendy's pale face and bloodied hand. "Ms. Knight, what happened? Did someone hurt you?"
He glanced at Ethan, who looked furious, suspecting he might have been the one to hurt Wendy.
Wendy wiped the blood from her hand with a tissue and forced a smile at Henry, "I'm fine. Could you please bring the divorce papers I asked you to prepare?"
Henry, ignoring Ethan's presence, couldn't help but advise, "Ms.Knight,
you don't have to settle for this. You could ask for more..."
Wendy shook her head. "No need."
Seeing he couldn't persuade her, Henry handed the documents to both of them.
Wendy glanced at the terms briefly before signing her name without hesitation.
Ethan carefully reviewed the document. Wendy was indeed only asking for two million dollars in assets. His agitation began to rise once more.
"Are you sure you only want two million dollars?" Ethan asked, staring at Wendy. "Think carefully. Once I signthere's no going back."
Wendy nodded.
Seeing her unwavering stance, Ethan suppressed his anger and pretended to be magnanimous. "Since you're being reasonable, I don't want people to think I'm stingy. The villa at Starlight Bay, the one we bought when we got married, you can have it."
Wendy was taken aback, not expecting Ethan to offer more.
But she figured he didn't want others to think he was treating her unfairly.
She forced a smile. If he was willing to give, she would take it.
Henry quickly left to amend the divorce agreement and returned with the updated documents.
Ethan grabbed a pen and swiftly signed his name.
Henry took the signed papers. "When would you like to submit the divorce application to the court?"
Wendy replied culmly, "As soon as possible."
Ethan gritted his teeth, glaring at her, "Then tomorrow. Don't regret it."
Wendy lowered her lashes, hiding the fleeting sadness in her eyes. "Fine, tomorrow."
Ethan, frustrated by her indifference, clenched his fists and stormed out.slamming the door behind him.
Henry looked at Wendy, wanting to say something, but seeing her pale.frail appearance, he chose to remain silent.
After Henry left, Wendy removed the IV needle, enduring the pain as she walked to the window and pulled back the curtains.
Sunlight poured in, and she squinted, looking out at the towering skyscrapers in the distance.
Finally, she was about to be free.
A nurse came in to change Wendy's bandages and was momentarily stunned.
The once tidy room was in disarray, papers scattered on the floor, the IV tube tangled on the bed, and the medication bag discarded, its contents spilled everywhere.
Most striking was Wendy's injured hand, covered in blood, staining the sheets.
The nurse, seeing Wendy's red-rimmed eyes, shook her head and gently
helped her back to the bed.
She carefully cleaned Wendy's left hand and reinserted the IV,speaking softly, "This might hurt a bit. Please bear with it."
Wendy asked, "How many more days do I need the IV?"
The nurse checked the chart, filled with notes, and estimated, "Probably another ten days or so."
Wendy frowned. That long?
But no matter what, she would go to the courthouse tomorrow, even if she had to be in a wheelchair, to finalize the divorce with Ethan.
She let out a heavy sigh. The nurse was skilled, and Wendy felt no pain. After changing the bandages, the nurse thoughtfully replaced the blanket.
Just then, Susan rushed in, immediately noticing Wendy's injured hand. Her eyes reddened. "Wendy, what happened to your hand?"
