Chapter 53: Chapter 53

Wendy had considered another possibility, but she quickly brushed it off.

She had spent a lot of time with Alexander, and their interactions were always pleasant.

He, a favored child of heaven standing at the top of the pyramid.surrounded by beautiful women, what kind of woman can't get him? How could one fall in love with a woman like her who has just divorced?

So what was the reason behind Alexander's repeated gestures of kindness?

Wendy's thoughts were all over the place, completely unaware that her mind was now entirely focused on Alexander.

Images of Alexander kept flashing through her mind.

Wendy lowered her gaze, hiding the confusion in her eyes.

"Wendy, eat up," Chris said softly, noticing that Wendy hadn't picked up any food for a while.

Wendy snapped out of her thoughts and smiled. "Okay."

She picked up her fork and took a bite of chicken.

The meat was tender and juicy, melting in her mouth, with a rich, flavorful sauce that paired perfectly with the unique spices.

"Delicious!" Wendy exclaimed.

Chris beamed. "Wendy, if you like it, have some more."

"Sure."

The two of them enjoyed a pleasant conversation over the meal.

After lunch, Wendy took a short nap before gathering her things to do her rounds.

Sean's kidney CT report was ready.

Wendy opened the report, which showed: [Bilateral polycystic kidneys, left renal pelvis stone.]

She then carefully reviewed the blood test results.

Blood count normal, liver and kidney functions normal, except for a small amount of blood in the urine, there were no other abnormalities.

She had a rough diagnosis in mind: polycystic kidney disease wasn't a mmajor illness, mostly chronic and benign.

The blood in his urine was likely caused by the stone. Given his strong physique, he should be able to recover ard be discharged in a day or two.

After handling Sean's case, Wendy quickly moved on to the other patients'records, reviewing each one and mentally organizing their conditions.

The newly admitted young patient, Caspian, had the most complex condition, with an unclear diagnosis that required extra attention.

The other post-surgery patients just needed their dressings changed daily.

Entering the ward, Wendy immediately noticed six-year-old Caspian sitting on his bed, fully engrossed in solving a Rubik's Cube. The red and yellow sides were almost complete.

With a few quick twists, Caspian solved the Rubik's Cube, his face lighting up with a happy smile.

Seeing Wendy, Caspian looked up and greeted her with a smile."Hi,Dr.Knight."

Caspian's mom, Octavia, stood up quickly to greet Wendy as well.

Wendy nodded, asking Octavia questions while swiftly jotting down notes in the medical record.

After a thorough inquiry, Wendy nodded in satisfaction and began examining Caspían's abdomen.

Despite being just a kid. Caspian tried to hide his fear, staying quiet and cooperating with Wendy's examination.

"You're such a brave boy," Wendy said, gently patting Caspian's head.

"Dr. Knight, thank you so much! You all are so thorough," Octavia said, her eyes slightly red with gratitude.

Wendy smiled softly. "You're welcome.",

As she spoke, Wendy noticed Sean out of the corner of her eye.

He was lying stiffly on the bed, staring blankly out the window, his eyes empty and lifeless, a stark contrast to his energetic demeanor from the morning.

"Why so down? Not sleeping well in the ward?" Wendy asked, walking over to Sean.

Sean seemed startled, his body jolting as he absentmindedly shook his head, looking troubled.

"The CT results are out, and it's not a big deal," Wendy said, puzzled by his demeanor.

"I know. Dr. Chase told me," Sean replied flatly, lowering his head to avoid Wendy's probing gaze.

Wendy stood by,full of doubt.

Polycystic kidney disease and kidney stones weren't life-threatening in her view, but Sean looked as if the sky had fallen.

This was too strange.

"What does autosomal dominant inheritance mean?" Sean suddenly asked Wendy.

"It means there's a 50% chance of passing the disease to your kids. It's not a big deal," Wendy explained after a moment's thought.

This condition was rare; Sean was her only case.

"My uncle died of kidney failure at 57," Sean murmured, sadness in his eyes.

Wendy felt a pang of unease.

Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease was a common hereditary kidney disorder, with significant genetic variability within and between families.

This disease could progress to kidney failure over time.

If his uncle died of kidney failure, Sean had a high chance of developing the disease.

Wendy frowned, trying to comfort him. "Sean, don't worry too much.Sometimes, stressing yourself out can make things worse. You might not even get it."

Sean gave a bitter smile. "You don't need to comfort me. My grandma always said the men in our family don't live long. Few make it past seventy. Now that I have been diagnosed with this diseuse again. Does it mean that this disease has been passed on to me since my parents'generation, and there is ako a possibiliey thae ie will be passed on to my next genvration?

Wendy hesitased."Genetirally speakingt your children have a 50% chance of inheriting the geve."

fwan's amile turned eoen morebweer."I was planning to get married by the end of the year. flot now. with shis tiking time bomb in my genes.can I still gat married? Wonhan't thas be unfaie to her?"

Seving his disttens. Wendy spote censly. "Sean. don't be too anxious. We all have thousands of grors and who knows how many of us carry tumor gones that just havn't muamihesaed yen?"

"But now I know I have this riok. How can I marry her without telling her? That wouldn't the faur so hee!' Scan said, his face full of worry.
